Title of Document: NAKED GOBIES (GOBIOSOMA BOSC) AS INDICATORS OF OYSTER REEF RESTORATION SUCCESS Terra M Lederhouse, M.S., 2009 Directed By: Dr. Kennedy T. Paynter, Director, Marine and Estuarine Environmental Sciences Naked gobies (Gobiosoma bosc) are the most abundant resident fish on oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay and serve as a critical trophic link between the benthic and pelagic communities. Their response to oyster restoration may therefore be a useful indicator of ecosystem functioning. Experiments were conducted from 2005-2006 in the Severn and Patuxent Rivers to determine the response of naked gobies to increasing availability of oyster substrate. Naked gobies and other resident macrofauna were collected from experimental oyster reefs, constructed using adult oysters of various densities, loose oyster shell, and ambient sediment. Naked goby abundance, length, dry weight, and biomass increased with the availability of oyster substrate and were positively correlated with the abundance of other resident macrofauna. Individual dry weight and biomass were greater on reefs with a high density of oysters than on control plots, and may therefore serve as important indicators of oyster reef habitat quality. ERDC TN-EMRRP-ER-12, Use of Alternative Materials for Oyster Reef Construction

BACKGROUND: Oysters are filter-feeding bivalve molluscs that form cohesive reefs in estuarine and near-coastal waters. In addition to their economic value, oysters can exert a powerful influence on water quality, phytoplankton productivity, and nutrient cycling (Dame 1996; Ulanowicz and Tuttle 1992); they also affect current patterns, flow, and sedimentation rates (Lenihan 1999). Oyster reefs o...

Bistability in a differential equation model of oyster reef height and sediment accumulation.

Native oyster populations in Chesapeake Bay have been the focus of three decades of restoration attempts, which have generally failed to rebuild the populations and oyster reef structure. Recent restoration successes and field experiments indicate that high-relief reefs persist, likely due to elevated reef height which offsets heavy sedimentation and promotes oyster survival, disease resistance...

Cryptic lineage divergence in marine environments: genetic differentiation at multiple spatial and temporal scales in the widespread intertidal goby Gobiosoma bosc

The adaptive radiation of the seven-spined gobies (Gobiidae: Gobiosomatini) represents a classic example of how ecological specialization and larval retention can drive speciation through local adaptation. However, geographically widespread and phenotypically uniform species also do occur within Gobiosomatini. This lack of phenotypic variation across large geographic areas could be due to recen...

A Restoration Suitability Index Model for the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) in the Mission-Aransas Estuary, TX, USA

Oyster reefs are one of the most threatened marine habitats on earth, with habitat loss resulting from water quality degradation, coastal development, destructive fishing practices, overfishing, and storm impacts. For successful and sustainable oyster reef restoration efforts, it is necessary to choose sites that support long-term growth and survival of oysters. Selection of suitable sites is c...

Success of constructed oyster reefs in no-harvest sanctuaries: implications for restoration

Dramatic declines in populations of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica are a symptom of degradation in many US Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico estuaries. We sampled 94 oyster reefs (88 constructed, 6 natural) within 11 no-harvest sanctuaries in estuaries of central and northern North Carolina, USA, to evaluate the success of oyster sanctuaries as a conservation tool. The sanctuaries have been...
